The 'Pro Ana' Emancipation Case

• The client, waitress Sophia Wilson, approached Denny while he was dining at her restaurant with Alan Shore. Speaking with Denny privately, she said her 16-year-old daughter had anorexia and had moved out because of their disagreement over the issue. Sophia wanted her daughter to obtain treatment, while Claire felt her eating habits were a "lifestyle choice". Claire had then sued for emancipation.
• Denny set up a meeting with Claire to "talk some sense into her", and he arranged for a spread of pastries and croissants to be laid out in the conference room. Claire brought her attorney, whom she had met through her own website, "Thinspiration". Attorney Ford had offered to help Claire on a pro bono basis because she was an advocate for the 'Pro Ana' movement, which promotes an "anorexic lifestyle". The meeting went nowhere, and the case proceeded to court.
• On the stand, Claire testified that she was a good student and planned to graduate from high school early. She also said she worked as a model, so she could be self-sufficient financially (demonstration of which is required for a minor to be emancipated).
• Unable to make headway in the courtroom, Denny attempted to shock Claire by introducing her to the mother of another anorexic girl, who lay near death in the hospital, but the tactic failed.
• Worried that Denny was not going to win the case, the client approached Alan. Behind Denny's back, Alan set up a meeting with Claire and her attorney. At the meeting, he presented an arrest warrant that could be executed, charging Claire with contributing to the delinquency of a minor because of some of the questionable tactics suggested on her website, such as how to obtain diet pills. The meeting ended with Claire and Sophia meeting privately, and Claire dropped the suit and returned home rather than face charges.
