Played by Anthony Heald
Judge Harvey Cooper first appeared when he presided over the "Black Widow" trial in the episodes
2x01 [The Black Widow] and
2x02 [Schadenfreude]. In that trial, he displayed his reputation as a non-nonsense judge by handing
Alan Shore a quadruple sentence for contempt. Later, he was the judge in the trial of Ronald Jessel, the child murder defendant whom
Denny Crane shot in the knee in
2x07 [Truly, Madly, Deeply]. In that trial, he famously ordered
Garrett Wells to hop out of the courtroom on one foot. In
Season 3, Cooper returned as the judge in the
Scott Little murder trial.
Judge Cooper's most identifiable characteristic is his eccentric pronunciation of "Massachusetts".
Anthony Heald
Anthony Heald is probably best-known for his role as Scott Guber, the stern vice principal with a heart of gold, in another
David E. Kelley series,
Boston Public. Previously, he appeared as Los Angeles-based Judge Wallace Cooper in three episodes of
The Practice. He also appeared on
The Practice as Principal Guber in a cross-over episode with
Boston Public characters.
