Joanna Miller
Played by Jane Lynch
Joanna Miller is a former sex therapist (specifically, a surrogate) who was convinced by old client Alan Shore to come out of retirement and help Jerry Espenson with his intimacy issues in episode 3x01 [Can't We All Get A Lung?]. During Joanna and Jerry's first private session, the police broke in and arrested them both. Alan defended both of them against prostitution charges brought by A.D.A. Frank Ginsberg, and Judge Brian Hooper agreed to dismiss the charges.
In 3x06 [The Verdict], Joanna returned to help Alan with his issues regarding his relationship with Sally Heep. Alan was feeling sexually insecure because Sally would "leave" immediately after they'd had sex. Joanna also fitted Alan for a pair of trousers - a ritual that pleasantly reminded him of the rare instances from his childhood when his mother doted on him (as he revealed to Denny Crane in 3x01).
(NOTE: The character is referred to as Joanna Monroe in the episode press releases, but she is clearly called 'Ms. Miller' by Judge Hooper in 3x01).
Jane Lynch
Gary M. Kramer wrote in a November 2006 article that Lynch rates her role on Boston Legal as being "among her favorites".
