Julie Bowen (Denise Bauer) joined the regular cast of Boston Legal in episode 2x01 [The Black Widow]. Prior to joining the show, she was best-known for her role as 'Carol Vessey' in the light romantic drama Ed, which aired from 2000-2004.

Bowen was born on March 3, 1970 in Baltimore, Maryland. She studied the Italian renaissance at Brown University and spent some time studying in Italy. Her fluency in Italian was observed in episode 2x09 [Gone], when she performed an interview in that language. While in college, Bowen performed in several theatrical productions.

Bowen got her first film credit while still in college, featuring in the independent film Five Spot Jewel (1992). After that, she spent some time on the daytime drama Loving (1993) and made some episodic guest appearances before landing the lead role in the Showtime film Runaway Daughters (1994). She then had a starring role in the mountain rescue series Extreme (1995), which proved to be very short-lived. In 1996, she appeared on episodes of Party of Five and Strange Luck and featured in her first major theatrical release, opposite Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore.

In 1998-99, Bowen got her first hint of major stardom when she appeared on nine episodes of the hugely popular drama ER, as John Carter's love interest Roxanne Please. She followed that with feature roles in films such as You're Kiling Me... and Joe Somebody before landing her potentially career-defining role as Ed Stevens' love interest on Ed. After that series ended, she appeared in several episodes of the John Stamos vehicle Jake in Progress (2005), one of which also featured Constance Zimmer.

Julie Bowen's addition to the cast of Boston Legal was announced at the ABC upfronts on May 17, 2005, becoming the young female lead on the show, replacing both Rhona Mitra and Monica Potter, who left the show after the first season. While appearing on Boston Legal, Bowen has also had a recurring role on Lost.

Bowen is married to real estate investor Scott Phillips. She announced in People magazine on November 13, 2006, that she is currently four months pregnant with the couple's first child.

Bowen, 37, who is married to Scott Phillips, had worked through her pregnancy and her water broke while she was filming, Ashley said.

"Everyone's fine. Everyone's healthy," he said of Bowen and her child, who weighed 6 pounds, 15 ounces and was 19 inches long.

"She is pleased," he said.
