Welcome to Boston Legal Wiki.

The TV Show Boston Legal is an American legal drama and comedy created by David E. Kelley (a multi-Emmy award winning American writer, executive producer, and creator of TV Shows) and has been airing since October 3, 2004. Some consider it as a spin-off of also another long-running legal drama The Practice. Boston Legal follows the professional and personal lives of attorneys at the law firm of Crane, Poole & Schmidt. The scenes and characters are renowned for their whimsical, occasionally surreal comedic touches, as well as moments of seriousness.
Boston Legal has been nominated and awarded for numerous awards for a TV show.

This site is dedicated to the ABC television series Boston Legal. I have created a basic framework, but I need help to build this site into a great resource for all fans of the show.

9/16/09 MALIBU -- Veteran comic character actor Henry Gibson, whose career included the 1960's hit "Laugh-In," and more recently " King of the Hill," died Monday.

Gibson died at his home in Malibu after a brief battle with cancer. He was 73.

Gibson was born Henry Gibson Bateman in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

He graduated from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and served in the U.S. Air Force as an intelligence officer.

After his discharge, he developed an act in which he portrayed a Southern accented poet.

His stage name may have been a play on dramatist Henrik Ibsen, and he often pronounced his name as if it were "Ibsen", particularly when performing as "The Poet".

Gibson's breakthrough came in 1968 when he was cast as a member of the original ensemble of NBC's top-rated "Laugh-In," on which he performed for three seasons.

Each week, a giant flower in his hand, he recited a signature poem, introducing them with the catch phrase that became his signature: "A Poem, by Henry Gibson."

Gibson appeared in four films by Robert Altman: The Long Goodbye (starring Elliott Gould), Nashville (starring Ned Beatty and Keith Carradine), as well as A Perfect Couple and Health. He also appeared in The Incredible Shrinking Woman (starring Lily Tomlin). He was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Nashville and won the National Society of Film Critics award for his role of country music singer Haven Hamilton.

Gibson spent three years as part of the Laugh-In television show's cast. He often played was "The Poet," reciting poems with "sharp satirical or political themes".

Gibson would emerge from behind a stage flat, wearing a Nehru jacket and 'hippie' beads and holding an outlandishly large artificial flower He would state the Title of poem -- by Henry Gibson", bow stiffly from the waist, recite his poem, and return behind the flat.

Gibson also regularly appeared in the "Cocktail Party" segments as a Catholic priest, sipping tea.

He would put the cup on the saucer, recite his one-liner in a grave and somber tone, then go back to sipping tea. He also made recurring appearances in the 1969-1974 anthology Love, American Style.

Gibson is remembered for his roles in two feature films. In the 1989 Tom Hanks/Joe Dante comedy, The 'Burbs, Gibson played the villain.

In 1980 he played the leader of the " Illinois Nazis" in the John Landis film The Blues Brothers. Most younger audiences associate him with this film in particular due to its popularity.

He made a brief appearance in Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia as an eccentric barfly. He also worked frequently as a voice actor in animation, most notably portraying Wilbur the pig in the popular children's movie Charlotte's Web (1973).

He also worked on the cartoon The Grim Adventures Of Billy & Mandy as Lord Pain.

Gibson re-teamed with director Dante a few years later when Gremlins 2 was released in 1990. He performed a cameo as the office worker who is caught taking a smoking break on camera and fired by the sadistic boss. He later had a leading role in a Season 5 episode of Stargate SG-1 entitled "The Sentinel", as the character Marul.

Gibson's most recently roles were alongside Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn in the 2005 comedy hit Wedding Crashers, and as supporting character Judge Clark Brown on the TV show Boston Legal.

Gibson is survived by three sons -- Jon, a business affairs executive at Universal Pictures; Charles, a director and two-time Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor; and James, a screenwriter -- and grandchildren Matthew and Miranda.

Their second collaboration came in "Nashville" (1975), in which Gibson earned a Golden Globe nomination and a National Society of Film Critics supporting-actor award for his performance as unctuous country singer Haven Hamilton. He also wrote his character's songs.

In television, Gibson's recent work included a five-season stint as cantankerous Judge Clarence Brown on ABC's "Boston Legal" and providing the voice for sardonic, eye-patched newspaperman Bob Jenkins on Fox's animated series "King of the Hill."

Born James Bateman in Germantown, Pa., on Sept. 21, 1935, Gibson began acting professionally at age 8. After graduating from Catholic University, he served in France from 1957-60 as an intelligence officer with the Air Force, then studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.

Back in New York, the actor developed the comic persona of "Henry Gibson" (a pun on the name of playwright Henrik Ibsen), a humble, wide-eyed poet laureate from Fairhope, Ala. Appearances on "The Tonight Show" and "The Joey Bishop Show" led to him being flown out to Hollywood by Jerry Lewis to be cast in "The Nutty Professor" (1963).

Also that year, Gibson appeared in his Broadway debut opposite Walter Matthau and Ruth Gordon in Lillian Hellman's "My Mother, My Father and Me."

Other memorable film roles for Gibson included a turn as the voice of Wilbur the Pig in the animated "Charlotte's Web" (1973); as an Illinois Nazi pursuing John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd in "The Blues Brothers" (1980); as a menacing neighbor opposite Tom Hanks in "The 'Burbs" (1989); as flamboyant barfly Thurston Howell in Paul Thomas Anderson's "Magnolia" (1999); and as a befuddled priest in "Wedding Crashers" (2005).

In 2001, he returned to Broadway in the Encores! New York City Center production of Rogers & Hart's "A Connecticut Yankee."

Offscreen, Gibson was active as an environmentalist; he contributed opinion pieces and poetry to publications such as the Washington Post and donated proceeds from the sale of posters featuring his poetry to the then-fledgling Environmental Defense Fund.

Gibson is survived by three sons -- Jon, a business affairs executive at Universal Pictures; Charles, a director and two-time Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor; and James, a screenwriter -- and grandchildren Matthew and Miranda.

Why We're Excited: The trailer makes us feel like we just ate two bowls of our favorite sugar cereal, and newcomer Jolie Vanier looks like Christina Ricci crossed with Violet Beauregarde. Also, the 80s suburbia look suits Rodriguez's lower budget/high return aesthetics.
Why We're Not: A candy-colored, hyper-saturated family movie might not seem like the most bankable prospect in the post-Speed Racer era, but maybe Warner Bros. won't lose their shirts and blouses this time around.
Trivia: Star Jimmy Bennett's big screen debut was in Daddy Day Care.

Fox Home Entertainment has announced to retailers that Boston Legal Season 5 is making it's DVD debut on May 5. This 4-disc set contains the final 13 episodes which include appearances by former cast members: Rene Auberjonois (Paul Lewiston); Betty White (Catherine Piper) and Julie Bauer (Denise Bauer).

Running 607 minutes long, the episodes will be shown in widescreen format.

Sunshine, rainbows, James Spader?

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The stars of ABC's "Boston Legal" are taking a break from the lives of their oversexed, ego-driven characters to channel sunshine and rainbows.

William Shatner, James Spader and Candice Bergen are among the celebrities and artists who've agreed to design some new versions of My Little Pony, the plastic toy that has captivated girls since the 1980s.

Pawtucket-based Hasbro Inc. will auction the special ponies for the Give Kids The World charity as part of a celebration of the toy's 25th anniversary.

The pastel-colored ponies — with names like Rainbow Dash and Daybreak — usually sport decorations on their hind quarters, often of hearts, balloons or stars. The celebrities and artists were given blank, 18-inch versions of the usually 4-inch-tall ponies to decorate, Hasbro spokesman Dan Benkwitt said.

Other designers include Grammy-winning singer LeAnn Rimes, 1980s teen idol Deborah Gibson and actor Danny Aiello, known for his roles in "Moonstruck" and "Do the Right Thing."
Artists designing ponies include illustrator Catalina Estrada from Spain, New York graffiti artist-turned-designer Claw Money and Japanese manga artist Junko Mizuno.

A pony designed by Estrada was expected to be unveiled at a collectors' fair this weekend in Providence, Benkwitt said. The others will be unveiled during a gallery event in Manhattan in September, when they also will be auctioned.

Benkwitt said Bergen and Aiello agreed to design ponies because of their support of the charity that provides vacations at central Florida theme parks for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. Bergen then got the cast members of "Boston Legal" involved.

Boston Legal Gail O'Grady Lands a New Series

Rick Gomez has been tapped to co-star in ABC's dramedy pilot "Cupid," Gail O'Grady has been tapped for a lead role on the untitled Dave Hemingson drama pilot and Sarah Lafleur has been tapped to co-star in the untitled David Kohan/Max Mutchnick comedy pilot.

The ABC Studios-produced "Cupid" is an updated version of Rob Thomas' 1990s comedy and centers on Trevor (Bobby Cannavale) who thinks he is the Roman god of love.

Gomez ("What About Brian") will play Felix, the owner of a struggling Manhattan dive bar who rents a room to Trevor despite his odd personality.

Gomez, who will next be seen in Taylor Hackford's "Love Ranch," is repped by APA and the Collective.

The Dave Hemingson project, from 20th TV, is an ensemble centered on a law school grad (Matt Long) from a blue-collar background who joins a Los Angeles boutique law firm. O¹Grady will play Susan Oppenheim, a competitive, cutthroat attorney at the firm who is married to the managing partner.

Also cast in the pilot as guest stars are George Segal, Lolita Davidovich and Alexandra Holden. O'Grady, who recurred on ABC's "Boston Legal," is repped by APA and manager Alan Lezman. Davidovich, who recurred on ABC¹s ³Dirty Sexy Money, is repped by Fortitude and manager Nancy Sanders. Holden (NBC¹s ³Friday Night Lights²) is repped by APA and Brillstein Entertainment.

The untitled Kohan/Mutchnick comedy, from WBTV, centers on two men -- Derek (Josh Cooke), who is straight, and Drew (Alan Tudyk), who is gay -- who are lifelong best friends and business partners.

Lafleur will play Audrey is Derek's stylish but emotionally messy girlfriend.

Lafleur, who is under a talent deal with ABC, is repped by Abrams Artists and attorney Jeff Bernstein.

Jon Cryer, James Spader try on 'Shorts'
Join William H. Macy and Leslie Mann in family adventure

Jon Cryer and James Spader are returning to the big-screen, signing up to star in Robert Rodriguez's "Shorts," a family adventure movie that also stars William H. Macy and Leslie Mann.

Rodriguez, who also wrote the screenplay, is producing the film with Elizabeth Avellan under their Troublemaker Studios banner. Robert Rodriguez is serving as his own director of photography, editor and visual effects supervisor.

Also among the cast is Jimmy Bennett ("Star Trek"), Kat Dennings ("The 40-Year-Old Virgin"),Trevor Gagnon ("The New Adventures of Old Christine"), Leo Howard ("G.I. Joe"), Devon Gearhart ("Changeling"), Rebel Rodriguez ("Planet Terror"), and Jake Short and Jolie Vanier.

"Shorts" is set in fictional Black Falls, a suburb where everyone works for Black Box Unlimited Worldwide Industries Incorporated whose communication gadget is sweeping the country. A young boy (Bennett) discovers a rainbow-colored rock that grants wishes to anyone who holds it, which first causes havoc amongst the kid population before turning up several notches when adults get their hands on it.

Cryer and Mann play the boy's parents while Dennings is the boy's older sister. Spader is Mr. Black while Macy is the father of a germophobic genius.

Dan Lin, Hunt Lowry and Stacy Cohen are serving as executive producers on the film, which is being filmed entirely on location in Austin, Texas.

"Shorts" is a presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures, in association with Abu Dhabi Media Company and Media Rights Capital.

The movie marks the big screen studio feature return for Cryer who has spent most of career in television after making a name for himself in movies like "Pretty in Pink" and "Morgan Stewart's Coming Home." He is repped by UTA and Forward Entertainment.

Spader, who has won multiple Emmys for his work in "Boston Legal," worked in theatrical features last with 2002's indie sensation "Secretary." He is repped by ICM.

CAA-repped Macy recently wrapped production on "Lonely Maiden" with Morgan Freeman and Christopher Walken, while Mann, repped by CAA is best know for her work in "Knocked Up" and "The 40 Year-Old Virgin."

5/13/08 "Boston Legal" will return for its fifth (and final) season of 13 episodes.
The series will shift to Monday's at 10:00/9:00c for its swan song, to be replaced by "The Bachelor" at midseason. McPherson says that creator David E. Kelley is expected to write most of the remaining episodes. Also due at midseason: the "Untitled Banks/Kutcher Project" will spell "Dancing With the Stars" cycles on Mondays while "Scrubs" and newcomer "The Goode Family" will fill the same void on Tuesdays. No time periods were specified for "Lost," "According to Jim" or "Primetime: What Would You Do?"

5/12/08 'Boston Legal' will return for a 5th Season !!!
The stalemate between ABC and "Boston Legal" creator David E. Kelley is headed to a resolution.

After intense negotiations, the network on Sunday reached an agreement with Kelley to bring "Legal" back in the fall. The network had originally intended to hold "Legal" for midseason.

The deal on "Legal" includes a reduced license fee for the show and is said to be subject to David E. Kelley Prods.' ability to make deals with the cast under the new fee. Like last year, cast reductions are likely. ABC has renewed Kelley's "Boston Legal" for a fifth season.

"Legal" will air in the fall, and it's believed ABC has the right to cut back its episode order on the show to 13, a person familiar with the discussions said.

The pact on "Legal" also opens the door for a series pickup of Kelley's drama pilot "Life on Mars."

The network had been zeroing in on a series order of the project starring Jason O'Mara, with "October Road" creators Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec and Scott Rosenberg coming in as executive producers and ABC Studios as a co-producer with 20th TV.

But such a deal had to be blessed by Kelley, who owns the rights to the property, an American version of the BBC series about a 21st century cop transported to the 1970s.

Now such a pact appears very likely.

This is the second time the fates of "Mars" and "Legal" have been tied together. Two years ago, ABC's "Mars" pickup helped clinch a renewal of "Legal."

Upon completion of the deal, "Life" is expected to be one of handful new additions to ABC's fall schedule, along with import "Scrubs" and the Ashton Kutcher-produced reality series "Opportunity Knocks."

In its return to the time period on its first telecast nearly 2 months, ABC's "Boston Legal" came back as the most-watched show (10.2 million) in Tuesday's 10 o'clock hour. The ABC legal-drama topped its original competition in the time period, CBS' third-place series debut of "Secret Talents of the Stars," by 5.6 million viewers (10.2 million vs. 4.6 million) and by 60% in Adults 18-49 (2.4/7 vs. 1.5/4). "Boston Legal" also ranked No. 1 in its time slot among Men 25-54 (2.7/7).

"Boston Legal" was up from its most recent airing in mid-February by 2.8 million viewers and by 33% in Adults 18-49 (7.4 million and 1.8/5 on 2/19/08), posting the series' strongest performance in 5 months on both counts - since 11/13/07.

3/31/08-NEW DAY and Time;
"Boston Legal" will move to Wednesday night at 10:00 p.m., as of WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET), where it will air for three weeks, on April 30, May 14 and May 21, with a preemption for an ABC News special on May 7. "MEN IN TREES" will return on WEDNESDAY, MAY 28 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET), following "Boston Legal's" run.

Programming Showcase to be Held at the New York Public Library

"Samantha Who?" returns Monday, April 7 (9:30-10:00 p.m., ET) with six original episodes.

"Boston Legal" returns Tuesday, April 8 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) with six original episodes.

"Desperate Housewives" returns Sunday, April 13 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET) with five original episodes and a special two-hour finale (seven hours total).

"Brothers & Sisters" returns Sunday, April 20 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) with four original episodes.

"Ugly Betty" returns Thursday, April 24 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) with five original episodes.

"Grey's Anatomy" returns Thursday, April 24 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET) with five original episodes.

Exclusive: Boston Legal Reunites Bergen/Bakula!

Murphy Brown fans, prepare to piddle yourselves silly. Boston Legal is reuniting Candice Bergen with her onetime MB squeeze, Scott Bakula.

Sources confirm that Legal creator David E. Kelley has tapped Bakula to guest-star in an upcoming episode as an old beau of Bergen's Shirley Schmidt who she meets up with at a bar.

No word on the exact number of episodes Bakula will appear in, or whether he'll run into fellow Starfleet captain William Shatner during his stay, thereby making the Star Trek universe implode.

News;Boston Legal Nabs Off-Net Clearances in 50% of U.S.

Twentieth Television has announced off-network clearances to-date for dramedy Boston Legal in 46 markets, representing 50 percent of the country, for a fall 2008 launch.

Client: Dr. Adam Carter
Case: The client was being sued for damages from committing sexual battery.
CP&S Representation: Shirley Schmidt and Tara Wilson
Opposing Counsel: Attorney Malcolm Holmes
Presiding: Judge Peter Harding
Result: The jury found in favor of the defendant.
Notes:

The client was accused of molesting the plaintiff, Mary Bradley, in an alleyway. She claimed he had approached her and fondled her breast. The defendant denied being involved in the incident. Shirley argued that it was a case of mistaken identity.
Ms. Bradley was a concert cellist who was also mute and thus could not testify verbally (or, apparently, by sign language or written word). Attorney Holmes convinced Judge Harding that she should be allowed to "testify" with her cello, while he interpreted her 'comments' using her written affidavit.
Ms. Bradley improvised on the stand, playing the theme from Jaws and the wicked witch theme from The Wizard of Oz at the beginning and end of Shirley's cross-examination.
Attorney Holmes was an old boyfriend of Tara's who hoped to coax her back.
After the verdict, Dr. Carter gave Tara a hug of thanks, and Tara made a strange look as if perhaps he had fondled her breast.

Jerry Espenson was an attorney in the corporate division at Crane, Poole & Schmidt for fifteen years. According to Denny Crane, he was known as a "banking and finance genius". Denny also warns Allan that Jerry hates being called "Hands" and Alan wonders why anyone would call him that. Alan Shore made Jerry's acquaintance when he contacted him for help in resolving Melissa Hughes's credit card difficulties in 2x10 [Legal Deficits] . It was immediately evident to Alan that Jerry was socially awkward, but had encyclopedic knowledge of the law. It was not determined until 2x12 [Helping Hands] that he has a condition called Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism. While Jerry has difficulty interacting with some people in stressful situations, he has formed a comfortable bond with his two companions: Linda, the gecko, and Patty, his life-sized companion doll.

Jerry's Partnership Dream
Jerry was up for partner in 2x11 [The Cancer Man Can], and - not knowing what his chances were - he asked his new friend Alan to help find out. Alan learned from Denny Crane that Jerry had no chance, mainly because he didn't fit the standard mold expected of partners (or, as Denny impolitely said, "He's a wierdo"). Furious with this line of reasoning, Alan confronted Shirley Schmidt, who explained that Jerry had also had "a few blowups", including one time in front of a client. Jerry also admitted having pushed another attorney once when he felt he was being ridiculed. Not willing to give up, Alan interrupted the partnership vote and launched a tirade on behalf of Jerry's candidacy. Despite Alan's efforts, however, Shirley informed Jerry that he would not be making partner.

Jerry's anger over the news came to a head when he interrupted Brad's partnership celebration and held the cake knife to Shirley's throat in front of the gathering. Alan was able to talk him into surrendering the knife, under the condition that he would defend him in any possible trial and Shirley pressed charges of attempted murder as well as a long list of other charges against Jerry. In 2x12 [Helping Hands], Alan defended Jerry in trial, pointing out that the firm led Jerry to believe he had a chance to make partner when he never did. His reports all claimed his work was brilliant but he was socially awkward. It was while researching his defense that Alan learned that Jerry had Asperger's. Based on the diagnosis, Alan convinced Shirley to drop the charges as long as Jerry received treatment. Given what had happened, however, Jerry could no longer remain employed at Crane, Poole & Schmidt.

Jerry As A Trial Lawyer
After leaving the firm, Jerry began receiving behavior modification therapy, and, by the time he appeared again in 2x22 [Ivan The Incorrigible], he carried himself with much more confidence. He was now a "solo practitioner" working in his specialty, financial law. However, he had taken on a court-assigned attempted murder case because his therapist had suggested putting himself in "more and varied social situations". When discussing the case, Jerry's confident front disappeared, and his old mannerisms returned, so Alan offered to be second chair. During the trial, the defendant gave a different answer than expected, causing Jerry to panic and make a crucial gaffe, probably damaging their case beyond saving, when up to that point he was doing excellent. After the trial, Alan said that, while Jerry "could develop into a first-rate criminal defender", he hoped he wouldn't, Jerry agreed that he should focus on finance.

Jerry continued to make great strides on his own. By 3x05 [Whose God Is It Anyway?], he had his own practice, and in 3x07 [Trick Or Treat], he mentioned that he had been featured in a magazine interview. In 3x08 [Lincoln] and 3x09 [On The Ledge], Jerry handled another criminal case, this time defending an acquaintance, Erica Dolenz, against murder charges. He again requested Alan's help in the case, but this time, he was able to stay mostly relaxed and maintain his focus (partly with the aid of medication) and brought the trial to a successful conclusion.

Legal Troubles
Besides his attempted murder trial, Jerry required legal assistance on three other occasions - and was represented by Alan in each case. In 3x01 [Can't We All Get A Lung], he was arrested for assaulting a police officer after they impounded his doll Patty during a traffic stop. The case was not resolved on-screen although Jerry received no evident punishment. In the same episode, he was brought up on charges of soliciting a prostitute after the police broke in on his therapy session with sexual surrogate Joanna Miller. The judge dismissed the charges.

In 3x05 [Whose God Is It Anyway?], Jerry was sued by a former lawyer at his firm for wrongful termination. The lawyer was an outspoken scientologist, and Jerry felt he was hurting the credibility of his firm. The jury ruled in his favor. Finally, in 3x07 [Trick Or Treat], Alan again defended Jerry against criminal charges, this time in a federal perjury case. Jerry had lied on a jury screening questionnaire about whether he supported the death penalty - he said he did when he actually opposed it in all situations. Alan won the sympathy of the jury, and he was found not guilty.

Jerry and Alan
Alan is apparently the closest friend Jerry has ever had (besides Patty). Alan demonstrated respect for Jerry from the first time they met, and Jerry was clearly impressed by Alan's tirade against credit card attorney Melvin Palmer in 2x10 [Legal Deficits]. Jerry tried to thank Alan for his help in 2x12 [Helping Hands], but he could only manage to say "Good-bye" as he left the firm. Later, Jerry apologized profusely after Alan's arrest in 2x24 [Deep End Of The Poole] because he felt responsible, having made the crucial mistake which led to Alan advising Ande Mkeba to flee the country.

Besides going to Alan for legal help, Jerry also revealed some of his closest personal issues to Alan. In 3x01 [Why Can't We All Get A Lung?], Jerry confessed to Alan that he had never been with a woman sexually. Alan recruited sex therapist Joanna Miller to help Jerry with his intimacy issues. One of the things she told him was that he would someday meet a "real, live Patty". Jerry thought he may have found her in Sally Heep in 3x05 [Whose God Is It Anyway?], but when he mustered the courage to visit her at her apartment, he found Alan already there. This incident did not seem to hurt Alan and Jerry's friendship in any way. In 3x09 [On The Ledge], Jerry told Alan that one of his dreams during law school had been to experience the "socialization of lawyering", but he said he'd never found that until meeting Alan. He also mentions to a co-worker that the first real hug he got was from Alan.

Jerry back at CP&S
In episode 3x22 [Guantanamo by the Bay] we find Jerry back in Shirley's office. He asks her for his old job, claiming that even though he had his own practice and clients, he had never had as much fun anywhere as he had at CP&S. In the end he persuades her (one of the arguments being that he is so happy with the idea that he hums a song to himself - the song being the theme song to Boston Legal - which was a fourth wall lowering) but she tells him that Denny Crane needs to approve and warns him that Denny feels threatened by his friendship with Alan. Christian Clemenson
Veteran actor Christian Clemenson won his first major award in 2006, taking home the Emmy for best guest actor in a drama for his portrayal of Jerry Espenson. One of his first television roles was in a 1985 episode of Golden Girls, with Betty White. In 1990, he was on the cast of short-lived drama Capital News (with Daniel Roebuck). His guest roles have included parts on LA Law (1986), The Practice (1998), and Ally McBeal (2002). Clemenson and James Spader have known each other since their early acting days, and the two appeared together in the film Bad Influence (1990). Clemenson's other film credits include supporting roles in Apollo 13 (1995) and The Big Lebowski (1998). Besides his work on Boston Legal in 2006, he received acclaim for his portrayal of a doomed passenger in the intense 9/11 film United 93.

Clarence Bell

Clarence "Clarice" Bell is a transvestite client who requested legal help after being fired from his job in episode 3x02 [New Kids On The Block]. "Clarice" insisted, at least initially, that she was a woman and was fired for requesting maternity leave if she were to adopt a child.

Alan Shore and Claire Simms handled the case, and they convinced Clarice's employer, Mr. Faber, to agree to hire "her" back as long as "she" didn't use the women's restroom. Clarence initially said he would reject the offer, but in 3x10 [The Nutcrackers], he stated that he had, in fact, returned to his earlier job and later quit.

"Clarice" has a brash and sassy personality and tends to be extremely rude to people while Clarence is shy and soft-spoken. In private conversations (partly overheard by Alan), Claire helped Clarence realize that he was simply hiding behind the "funnier and smarter" character of "Clarice". To help him gain confidence as Clarence, Claire asked him to go to a movie with her.

"Clarice" later applied for the position as Claire's assistant. Clarence revealed to her that he had gone to law school, and Claire agreed to hire Clarence - but not "Clarice". After being hired, Clarence did some research on his own regarding the lightning-strike case being handled by Denise Bauer, Brad Chase, and Jeffrey Coho and found some cases which helped them achieve a settlement. Later, he revealed to Claire that he had actually passed the bar exam but did not feel confident enough to actually practice law.

Besides, "Clarice", Clarence has at least teo other alter-ego'd, his confident and stern 'brother' Clevant and on special ocasions Oprah Winfrey. He once also states that he used to dress up as Martin Luther King but stopped because kids today don't know who M.L.King was. He does not suffer from multiple personalities disorder, the alter-ego's are only a way for him to deal with the world.

With a little help from Alan Shore, Claire Simms and Jerry Espenson he later becomes a good attorney, but before that happens he needs to rely on Alan's help a few times, once actually so he doesn't lose his house. When he first meets Carl Sack they start off on the wrong foot and after Carl finds out Clarence sometimes still dresses as a woman he nearly fires him. Eventually Clarence appeals to Carl's softer side and Carl actually comes watch a competition (quarter-finals) where Clarice is singing on stage and later even represents Clarence when they decide to sue Youtube for showing Clarence's outburst without a context.

Gary Anthony Williams
Atlanta native Gary Anthony Williams' early career included stage performances at the Laughing Matters comedy club and in the Georgia Shakepeare company. His first television credits were in episodes of In The Heat Of The Night (1990) and I'll Fly Away (1991) that were filmed in Georgia. He continued to find some work nearby, such as the film Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil (1997), but he eventually moved to Los Angeles in 1998. His main television credits include a recurring role on Malcolm In The Middle (2000-6) and a voice role on the animated series The Boondocks (2005-6). He also played various characters in the short-lived WB comedy sketch show Blue Collar TV (2004) and appeared on two episodes of Lovespring International (2006), with Jane Lynch.

Claire Simms

Claire Simms is the associate who joins the Boston office of Crane, Poole & Schmidt in episode 3x02 [New Kids On The Block]. Claire was convinced by Jeffrey Coho, against her better instincts, to transfer with him from the New York office and she is still trying to get comfortable in Boston.

Clearly not adept at endearing herself to new acquaintances, Claire has the habit of repeating the word "Ick" to express her disapproval of something. Despite her abrasive manner, Claire did demonstrate that she has a softer side with the sympathetic way in which she handled cross-dressing client Clarence (sometimes Clarice, Clavant and on one ocasion Oprah Winfrey) Bell, with whom she gets romantically involved. Claire's frank public comments give her a veneer of toughness and tactlessness, however her thoughts expressed in private show acute observation and sensitivity. She does not suffer fools nor men who appear to try and use her. Clarence is most likely the reason she decides to stay in Boston even after Jeffrey Coho "abandons her" and leaves the firm.

Besides working at the New York office of CP&S, Claire also worked previously as a Supreme court clerk.

Brad Chase

Brad Chase (played by Mark Valley) is a partner at Crane, Poole & Schmidt. He is a straight-laced ex-Marine who finds himself displaced as Denny Crane's protege by Alan Shore. Alan and Brad both used to date Sally Heap, another attorney at CP&S, which inflames Brad's discomfort.

He speaks very fast, the thinking being that if they charge clients by the hour it would be unethical to waste their time. That trait costs him to lose a trial to Donny Crane, the closest person Denny has to an actual son.

Although almost becoming a Navy Seal, defusing a human bomb, accidentally chopping off three fingers of a priest and in any situation trying to be the hero, he feels threatened by men who mock him or women find more attractive than him. Because of that he often talks to female co-workers in a way that gets him into an awkward position. He also very often almost begs the police if he can help with an arrest, being an ex-marine.

He is homophobic and is uncomfortable even saying the word lesbian. He goes round the office under the nicknames "Ken doll" and "Buzz Lightyear", the latter of which he embraces by wearing a Buzz costume at a party.

During one of his awkward talks to a co-worker Denise Bauer he says that even though he can get a different girl evey night because he was a marine, is a lawyer and is good-looking they tend to leave because he is the world's worst kisser. After she offers to teach him through practical demonstration, he improves drastically, so she offers him to be her friend with benefits. They later get pregnant and after he convinces her that he needs to wear his marine uniform at the wedding they also get married. He later becomes an assistant district attorney and remains on fairly good terms with his former co-workers.

Denny Crane

Denny Crane (played by William Shatner) is
the egotistical founding partner of Crane, Poole & Schmidt, a huge law firm with offices all round the world, he is a man who smokes cigars and drinks expensive scotch, all the while bragging about his spotless trial record and shamelessly hitting on any attractive woman he meets. He has won over 6000 cases and never lost. In Boston he is notorious and he often reffers to the city as his city. He also often "knows everybody" from a certain branch of the government, his contacts going as high as Dick Cheney and perheps even Bush. His name is so legendary that, according to himself, he sometimes meets a new person who is so awestricken to be in the same room, that he needs to say his name, simply to confirm to the new person that it is true. He is pro-life and a strong believer in the death penalty.

Denny is a hard-line Republican, yet his closest friend at the firm is Alan Shore, who often defends liberal causes. The two share an intimate friendship which culminates, in most episodes, with an evening meeting on Denny's office balcony to smoke, drink, and discuss the events of the day.

Denny has several guns and rifles hidden in his office and often carrying a gun with him even to court. He once shoots a court appointed client after trying to take him self off the case. He states he would rather go to prison than lose one minute defending a man who has raped and killed a child. A homeless person once throws a rock at the back of his head after which Denny shoots him with a painball gun. When a robber tries to get his watch and wallet he distracts him as he shoots him in one knee and both feet. After being provoked and in self defense he shoots his own therapist. Later at the trial, when the therapist testifies and pulls out the gun again so does Denny and he shoots him again. The judge believes Denny saved his life so he let's him go free of any charges. He also saves the life of his best friend when he is at the point of being killed with the police too far away to help, again by shooting the would-be killer.

Denny has been married six times, and is on the lookout for "number seven", whom he finds just before the end of his public appearances. He once had a relationship with fellow named partner Shirley Schmidt, although they were not married; Denny still holds a torch for her. He has dated on and off a dwarf as well as her mother. His wives are known to usually be greedy for power and money and usually try to influence Denny to the point it gets risky to the firm. He cheated on his 6th wife three hours after the ceremony in the coatroom with a waitress. He had an affair with the wife of one of the biggest clients and on at least one occasion threatened the judge to sleep with his wife. He once had a one night stand with a woman who later told him she was raising his son Donny Crane. She later confessed that she lied, looking for the deepest pocket. He however kept providing money for Donny although he does not see him for 12 years. When they go head to head (Donny also being a lawyer) we can see Donny is trying to live up to Denny's legacy so much he even keeps repeating his own name so that he would channel his father. When he finds out the truth he asks to keep the name.

Denny has occasional lapses in memory (and judgment), and has been diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. He first met his closest friend during a time when he still tried quite a few cases and fellow attorneys said his confused behaviour simply washes away in court. This later gets worse so Alan convinces him of taking a test. Doctors tell him he has a precursor to Alzheimer's, which Denny prefers to refer to as "Mad Cow Disease" since they have similar symptomps. According to the doctor he most likely will not live long enough to get full blown Alzheimer's since he smokes, drinks and is already 75 years old. To decelerate the impairment he solves crossword puzzles and sometimes speaks french. He also on ocasion does something insane on purpose to throw people of track. He says people don't know if he knows what his plan is most of the time, admitting a lot of the time neither does he.

His closest friend Alan believes that even as the disease progresses so far that Denny will not be able to practise law, he will still enjoy his favorite hobby - fishing. Denny has asked Alan to euthanise him when he is too far gone, claiming he wants to be shot in the head so he can die a legend and later says he wants his ashes scattered of the office balcony, where he and Alan take 5 minutes of each day to drink scotch, smoke cigars and talk, because it is a very special place.

Born in Dedham, Massachusetts, in 1961, and educated in eastern Massachusetts, Alan Shore is well-known as being the best anti-trust attorney in the Commonwealth. Alan has worked for at least four law firms, including Carruthers, Abbott (where he was fired for embezzling); Young, Frutt & Berluti (where he was fired for his unethical practices); and, currently, Crane, Poole, and Schmidt, where he pulls in a salary of $375,000 per year. During his few months at Young, Fruit & Berluti he had made over 9 million dollars for the firm or about 6 times more than every other lawyer in the firm combined.

Little is known of Alan's family life. He has an older sister, whose diary he used to read. His uncle was a butcher, and he also had an uncle named Charles, though they may not be the same person. Someone very dear to him once died of Alzheimer's disease, but it is unknown if this person was a relative. The status of Alan's father is unknown, but according to Alan, his father was disappointed in him, something that, naturally, continues to haunt him. He believes he would be a horrible father, claiming his great-grandfather was a horrible parent and that it only got worse with every new generation. Alan's relationship with his mother seems conflicted at best. On the one hand, Alan had fond memories of his mother measuring him for trousers every autumn before school started. On the other hand, he claims it was the only time she touched him with affection. He also once attempted to shoot her in effigy, but missed, claiming he was only trying to scare her.

As a child, Alan was something of a prankster. He seemed to be harassed by the schoolyard bullies, but at the same time, developed friendships that lasted into his adult life. Never what would be considered a "manly man", Alan shrunk away from physical violence. He has never beaten anyone up, fearing the physical pain such a fight might cause to the point that he is unwilling and unable to defend himself, choosing to pay others to fight for him. For this, he sees himself as "craven."

Alan's history with women has been colorful. As a teenager, he slept with his best friend's mother. In college, not a day went by that Alan didn't want to sleep with his colleague, Samantha. Later on, his girlfriend, Christine, tried to run him over with her car. He subsequently defended her at a hearing to get her released from the psychiatric hospital, admitting both the possibility that he deserved what she did, and that he had toyed with her sanity. Alan cohabited with a little person for 3 years, and frequently solicited the company of prostitutes. He claimed that a relationship with him always had an eventual, adverse effect on the woman in question, and admitted that most of his relationships with women were sad. This may stem from his confession that the only thing he requires in a relationship is that he remain utterly alone. Being alone, however, scares him. He at one time enters into a relationship with a judge and he is happy untill the day she tells him she wants children at which point he leaves. Alan also once "rated" his assistant's sweaters, and admitted to engaging the services of a sex therapist. On many occasions he admits to his weakness of being attracted to most women and when talking to women his mind invariably goes to sexual fantasies.

Currently a widower, Alan was once married. At some point in the marriage, however, their relationship apparently became strained, for Alan claimed that he grew to hate his wife because she began to know him too well. After her death, however, he came to miss that aspect of her most of all.

An important relationship to Alan seems to be the one he shared with his colleague, Tara Wilson. Unlike his other relationships, he admitted, in his own way, to having fallen in love with her. The relationship did not work out, however.

There is something of a dark side to Alan's psyche. While at Young, Frutt, and Berluti, Alan was frequently accused of self-destructive tendencies, both professionally and personally, as well as possessing a very unhealthy amount of self-loathing. Unappreciative of those who try to engage him in a discussion of his psyche and not really delving into it himself, Alan has always enjoyed his melancholy. He has never considered himself to be loved and suffers from occasional night terrors, and has an irrational fear of clowns stemming from an incident in early childhood involving his mother and a hideous clown mask. As an adult, Alan went through a brief period of emotional and mental distress that caused him to have difficulty forming coherent sentences, an episode that frightened him greatly, as he relies heavily on his communication skills. Once living in a spacious home with a pool, Alan sold his permanent abode to take up residence in a hotel, a place he could leave at a moment's notice.

Alan has a very strong sense of self-defined justice that often leads him to employ illegal and unethical tactics in its pursuit, sometimes ruthlessly and without regard for who he hurts in the process, once even using his girlfriend, Sally Heep, to accomplish his goals, which are often morally grey but always just (from a certain point of view). He hated the bullies of his childhood, and continues to hate adult bullies just as much. He sometimes lacks personal restraint when trying cases he feels deeply about. He once goes before the supreme court to defend a man against the capital punishment, where his restraint breaks and he accuses the judges of not being fair nor just. He even insults some of them personally, though takes care not to upset the ones his counselors told him are apt to vote for his cause.

Alan also has a very compassionate side to him, with a special affinity for/connection to children. Hating to represent "evil" people, he frequently champions the causes of those who can't defend themselves, such as the homeless or mentally ill, employing the aforementioned tactics in his quest for justice. On more than one occasion, Alan has given of his own financial resources to those in need. He also does volunteer work with the Salvation Army.

Alan holds friendship to be nearly sacrosanct and far more important than his relationships with women. His best friend is Denny Crane, and in spite of Denny's odd behaviour at times, Alan has resolutely refused to use his friendship to manipulate Denny for the sake of the firm. He also refused to try a case against his friend and former co-worker, Ellenor Frutt, and resorted to very illegal and nasty tactics against the wife of a friend of his, claiming that he wasn't afraid to do jail time for it. Alan even besmirched his own character in court for the sake of advancing the defense of his best childhood friend, who was on trial for murder. In addition to giving money to clients in need, he has also done the same for his friends, in one case offering to "fix" the car of the owner of the shop Catherine Piper robbed in order to keep her out of jail. Betrayal of friendship is something Alan cannot abide, and something that wounds him deeply. There is one lnown exception to this rule however. He is very competitive in court so he may do something he later always regrets. He once used a medical condition of a lawyer friend (Jerry Espenson) to get an advantage and ultimately win the case. The friend later forgave him and believes Alan to be a morally great person and even thinks of him as a father figure, telling him on one occasion that he would make a wonderful father.

In his first year of employment at Crane, Poole, and Schmidt, Alan was held hostage by the ex-husband of one of his clients. He had been shot at some point in his past, but in this instance, he believed he was going to die. Once the situation was resolved, Alan confessed to Tara that he always believed that, due to the kind of life he led, death by homicide was God's plan for him. In the same vein, he also once confessed to being convinced that in a past life, he was murdered in his sleep. When he thought he was going to die, images of those he loved appeared in his mind. He said to Denny that he saw an image of Liza Minelli, probably in jest. While not a very religious man, Alan does believe that there must be something more after death, and would prefer to be buried, rather than cremated.

Alan's interests include wrestling, fishing, jigsaw puzzles, football, hockey, and the finer things in life. He loves wine, and has a wine refrigerator in his office. Like his friend Denny, Alan considers himself to be a very proud American; unlike Denny, however, Alan does not like guns or enjoy hunting, though he does own one gun which he never uses. He has a fear of flying and suffers from motion sickness. He is also afraid of water, though it does not stop him joining the Coast Guard, so he can serve the country. Alan also has a foot fetish and an uncanny ability to tie ties. And at some point in his past, he used to own a dog named "Alan" (the dog was named Alan when he got him) who, unfortunately, had to be euthanized due to cancer and hip dysplasia.

Near the end of his public life his best friend Denny proposes to him, saying how much sense it makes. They often express love to each other, they have sleepovers and call themselves flamingoes (due to a halloween party) though they are very deffinately not gay. He accepts the offer, because his best friend needs a spouse who will take care of him when his Alzheimer's progresses. After this he disappears from the media, presumably to enjoy a more private life.

JAMES SPADER was born 7 February, 1960, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

He is the son of teachers Todd and Jean Spader, and attended Phillips Academy in Andover

with director Peter Sellers, and his friend John F. Kennedy, Jr. He likes to be called Jimmy.

James dropped out in eleventh grade. He bused tables, shoveled manure, and taught yoga before landing his first roles as an actor. He graduated from TV movies to Brat Pack Films, playing mostly the bad guy.

His performance in SEX, LIES & VIDEOTAPES (1989) won him the Best Actor Award at Cannes in 1989, which led to bigger and more varied roles.

James married Victoria Kheel (she's the same age as him) in 1987.

One biography of James' says hedivorced Victoria in 2004, but us fans never actually found out if he is definitely divorced.

James & Victoria have two children, Sebastian and Elijah.

James never watches any of his movies.

James loves cooking. (He can come on over and cook for me!)

ABC Summary
"Boston Legal" ends its five-season run in a two-hour finale that finds Crane Poole & Schmidt in dire financial straits - possibly forcing the firm to find a buyer. And Alan Shore heads to the Supreme Court to persuade them to let Denny Crane have access to a non-FDA approved drug that could slow down his rapidly progressing Alzheimer's. Meanwhile, Shirley Schmidt and Carl Sack plan their wedding, and Denny poses an important question to Alan, on the series finale of "Boston Legal.

Denny Crane vs The Supreme Court

Denny ask Alan to marry him due to the fact that his Alzheimer's is getting worst and if he could no longer make any decisions Alan would make them for him. They went downtown to apply for a marriage license and the clerk (homo) filed papers to block their marriage. Alan went before the United States Supreme Court to get permission to obtain a non FDA approve drug from China that would help Denny with his Alzheimer's and be a more productive person for many years to come instead of wasting away.

At first the group wanted to keep the same staff onboard but Denny came after them with a gun and Shirley voiced her opinon on China's policy on just about everything from human rights to civil liberties and wanted her name off the sign which by the way renamed it Chang, Poole and Schmidt.

Alan Shore and Denny Crane sue the government when cattle rancher Carol Hober - who, Crane believes, is the spitting image of actress Valerie Bertinelli -- accuses the USDA of not allowing her to test all of her cows for Mad Cow Disease, an affliction that's close to Denny's heart. But Denny continually irritates Carol when he tries to make her confess that she really is Valerie Bertinelli. (Casting note: Carol Hober is played by Valerie Bertinelli).
